Water and Oil

Step 2: Preheat the oven
You turned the heat on long ago,
and I burned for you.
But somewhere along the way,
you turned off the oven,
to let my charred edges grow hard and cold in the oven,
all alone.
So,
I now find myself turning the oven on after a long day,
just to see if I can bring you back to me,
or down with me.
Just to see if you will burn with me,
or separate from me.
Will you ever burn for me like I did for you?
if you don’t,
will you still be my sweet consolation?
Or will we be stuck,
as water and oil,
forever?
I was thinking of making banana
bread -
not only for that feeling of
sweet consolation,
the smooth glide of the spoon
that gives your taste buds a hug
after a really,
really,
really,
long day –

also for the process.
The ritual, the effort put in.
Step 1: Mix the wet ingredients.

But what if they’re water and oil?
What if,
I keep whisking and whisking,
trying my very hardest to make
something that doesn’t want to be made?
Does that separation,
that refusal to fuse,
fuck up the product?
Will my chocolatey, cinnamon coated tongue
recognize the flaws in its creation?
